What Maintenance is Required for Ford Electric Cars?

Date: Sept 21, 2023

A blue truck is recharging its electric battery.

Electric vehicles offer many benefits, from their eco-friendly performance to their advanced tech features. What’s more? They have a simpler design than their gasoline-powered counterparts, so that means less maintenance over the course of ownership. Your EV will still require service from time to time to continue performing at its best. What maintenance is required for Ford electric cars? We dive into the details of Ford F-150 Lightning maintenance and Ford Mustang Mach-e maintenance in the guide below.

Ford Electric Car Required Maintenance

What is the Ford electric car maintenance schedule? Find out when to perform these essential tasks.

  • Battery Checks – One of the most crucial steps in the Ford EV maintenance guide is regularly checking your vehicle’s battery. This is even more true if your electric car runs on a lithium-ion pack. In general, EV batteries are designed to last 100,000 miles or more. However, regularly checking the battery can help catch small problems before they lead to major repair bills.
  • Brake Fluid Replacement – Have the brake fluid replaced every 3-5 years. If the brake warning light flashes on your driver information cluster, this task will need to be done sooner.
  • Coolant System Maintenance – Most EVs have special thermal management or cooling systems that ensure you get the most out of your EV battery. Take a look at your owner’s manual to see when this is recommended for your particular make and model.
  • Tire Rotation – The battery pack makes EVs heavier than similarly sized vehicles with an internal combustion engine. This is why it is important to stay on top of tire care. Remember to rotate your tires every 5,000 to 10,000 miles.
  • Wheel Alignment – Perform a wheel alignment every 15,000 miles. Doing this regularly will help improve mile range and reduce tire tread wear.
  • Air Filter Replacement – Every 2-3 years, replace the air filter to reduce pollen, road dust, dirt, and other potentially harmful particles. Specialty air filters may need to be replaced less frequently.

Ford F-150 Lightning Maintenance

A Ford F-150 Lightning will require less fluid maintenance compared to models with an internal combustion engine, as regular oil changes are a thing of the past. Your truck will still need standard fluid work like brake fluid service and windshield wiper fluid replacement. Because of regenerative braking, your F-150 Lightning is also easier on its braking system. This means less frequent brake pad replacement.

Every 35,000 miles or so, we will replace your cabin air filter. What about battery service? Many Moorestown drivers are hesitant to make the switch to an electric vehicle because of the cost to replace an EV battery. Fortunately, EV batteries have a long lifespan and your battery is covered with an eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty, whichever comes first, in addition to 70% degradation coverage. You do not have to worry about being on the hook for the cost if your battery wears out prematurely.

Ford Mustang Mach-e Maintenance

Ford Mustang Mach-e maintenance is also more simple and straightforward. We have included its recommended service intervals below.

10k-Mile Service or 1 Year:

  • Wheels & Tires – Rotate all tires to ensure even tread wear
  • Inspection – Check brake pads, tires, and fluid levels

20k-Mile Service or 2 Years:

  • Cabin Air Filter – Replace with new filter
  • Wheels & Tires – Rotate all tires to ensure even tread wear
  • Inspection – Check brake pads, tires, and fluid levels

30k-Mile Service or 3 Years:

  • Brakes – Replace brake fluid
  • Wheels & Tires – Rotate all tires to ensure even tread wear
  • Inspection – Check brake pads, tires, and fluid levels

When your vehicle hits 40,000 miles or 4 years, the services listed above will continue at regular intervals. Additional services will be needed at 100,000 miles for the electric drive assembly fluid and at 200,000 miles for a battery coolant replacement.
